Registrars, 3rd party auditors, and
organizations are just starting to realize that the changes in ISO
9001:2008 incorporated fully into ISO/TS 16949:2009 may be more significant
than first believed.
Accreditation
bodies and large registrars have identified a number of significant changes
that affect how both ISO 9001:2008 and ISO/TS 16949:2009 is audited.
Overall,
ISO 9001:2008 introduces 61 changes and affects 70% of the clauses. Based on a review of the significant

16949:2009 similarly introduces 61 changes including 15 significant
changes that may affect your system.
The IATF
Communiqué on ISO/TS 16949:2009 Transition process says that “ISO 9001:2008 requirements in
the boxed text of ISO/TS 16949:2009 is effective not later than 120 days
after the release of ISO/TS 16949:2009”. Organizations can transition to
ISO/TS 16949:2009 after a surveillance audit.
As you
transition your ISO/TS 16949:2009 system, you need to complete a
Documentation Review to ISO/TS 16949:2009 (including ISO 9001:2008), upgrade your QMS and then conduct an Internal Audit.
You only have 120
days to transition to the ISO 9001:2008 Requirements per the IATF Communiqué.
